When work becomes passion

Announcing the presales for Novitas Magazine: Issue 1

//

I have always been called to do work that is driven by self-motivation rather than work that I am told to do. From high school onward, I could recognize that the limited direction of “finding a job to earn income” was not the path that I was interested in taking. Don’t get me wrong, I have done my time commuting, sitting behind desks, and earning money for other people, but it never felt right. It probably doesn’t work for you either.

Honestly, though, I have been passionate about those jobs! The best ones have allowed me to lean into that passion so that the work feels less forced. The worst ones reprimanded me for being too invested. I even got fired from one.

Work that is driven by passion doesn’t feel labourious. It flows instead of dribbling. I rabbit hole. I hyper-focus.

There are many things that I feel passionate about, and there are many more ways that the passion manifests into work. I love writing code (strange, I know). I love planting seeds, both literal and rhetorical. I love mentoring kids. I obviously love writing. I desperately love designing. When I can pair these skills with a cause that feels worthy, work transforms into pure joy, and I feel exceptionally honoured to be able to transform this labour into digital or tangible objects that help the world.

Keeping all this in mind, it is almost impossible to explain the feeling that I have right now in announcing that the first issue of Novitas, the magazine, is ready for presales.

I have read the most amazing stories from some of the most amazing people. I have been honoured to take these stories and transform them into a magazine. I am joyful. I am humbled. I am excited to share this with the world.

Here are the details: Presales for the magazine are launching today and will run until Wednesday, June 12, at 1 p.m. EDT. The first issue will cost $25 CAD and comes with a sticker pack. There are a number of additional tiers if you feel called to contribute more. You can learn more about the project at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/subsomatic/novitas-magazine-and-podcast?ref=56ri21

I decided to go with Kickstarter to help reach a wider audience and give the project some additional legitimacy. I struggled with the decision because the platform takes an additional 5% that I could have saved by running presales through the Novitas website instead. I am hoping that the latter approach can be used in the future to save some of those funds.

I am very excited to try distributing any profit from this project in a democratic way with all of the contributors. I have big dreams about how to make this happen and will share more about it in the future.

I hope you’ll consider buying a copy of this first issue and then stick around as we move into the podcast portion of the project. Each contributor will join me in conversation to chat in more depth, and I’m just as excited to tackle this part of the project as I am for the print publication. There won’t be any paywall for the podcast, but you’re always welcome to support it financially by becoming a paid subscriber to this substack.

Thankyouthankyouthankyou for all your support, folks. I am brimming with joy. I am so excited to make this dream come true and share it with you all.
